Preserving Lake Wakatipu's Maritime History

The Wakatipu Community Maritime Preservation Society Inc, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the maritime history of the Wakatipu area through restoration projects, museum displays and membership.

Who We Are

We are a collection of like minded individuals who believe that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly in the actions of our initiatives. From the moment we started our work restoring the Frankton Wharf boat shed and ticket office in 2005, we understood that by working together we could better overcome the challenges presented by such an important project, and that is why we decided to launch the Wakatipu Community Maritime Preservation Society Inc.  We take great pride in the Wakatipu districts maritime history and continue to work towards its preservation so that the wider community and guests to the region may enjoy it, now and into the future.

Preservation

It's in our name

Our society is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Lake Wakatipu's rich maritime heritage. We focus on safeguarding, restoring and maintaining historical artifacts and vessels that have shaped the lake's past. Our most significant  project to date is the meticulous restoration of the historic boatshed and ticket office, which now serves as a museum and exhibit space. Here, visitors can explore a collection of maritime items that tell the story of the lake's nautical history, from old models to treasured vessels. Through our work, we aim to keep the traditions and stories of Lake Wakatipu alive. The building is also to the  home to the delightful The Boat Shed Café & Bistro.

Community Engagement

Awareness & Participation

The Wakatipu Community Maritime Preservation Society Inc is a very much a community based organisation both in it's membership & those it serves. Effective community engagement helps build trust, ensures that initiatives are relevant and responsive to local needs, and fosters a sense of shared responsibility and belonging. It ultimately contributes to the well-being and resilience of the community. The society achieves this through partnerships and collaborations with local organisations, member volunteering and stewardship of the society's assets.
